Information about
the neighborhood and city (video): |
Alhama de Almería is the birthplace of Nicolás
Salmerón, former President of
the Primera República. This is why the town
is also known as Alhama de Salmerón,
or Alhama la Seca. However, the most
important defining feature of the town is its Balneario
de San Nicolás (San Nicolas Spa), strongly valued by the
locals, which has hot springs maintaining a temperature of 46 degrees all
year round. It has around 3,600 inhabitants. Alhama is near the
capital of the city, Almería, 22 kilometres. Alhama is a
cozy small town by the mountain; although small, it has a variety of grocery
stores. There is a cultural center where they offer music lessons, dance
lessons, as well as other various activities throughout the year. There are
also a few gyms and a local sports center as well as some pubs and tapas
bars. In relation to the gastronomy, those who want to
taste the stand-out gastronomic delicacies in Alhama de Almería will have to
try the cold meats, consisting mostly of pork, migas (fried
breadcrumbs served with pork), puchero de trigo (wheat stew)
and fritada de conejo con pollo (fried rabbit with chicken).
Things to see (Balneario de San Nicolás, Castillo de
Los Castillejos, Iglesia de San Nicolás de Bari, Ermita de San Antonio de
Padua, La Puente, Ermita del río, Loma de Galera,…) Popular festivals in Alhama de Almería are Fiesta de
San Nicolás de Bari and Inmaculada Concepción (December), Fiestas de Verano
and San Marcos. The climate in Alhama is partly warm all the year,
summers are hot and winters are cool
and low and irregular rainfall. Promotional video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=La7Q_HFrJsE&ab_channel=OnofreAlmer%C3%ADa |
Getting to school: |
Walking/Biking
if you live in town. If living in Almería, you can organize carpool with
teachers. |
Accommodation (vídeo) - Where
to live in town? - Possibility
of staying with a family? -
Possibility of sharing a flat with other teachers or language assistants? |
- It is recommended
to live in the town. It is difficult to get public transport from Almería
into town, so it’s not ideal to live there. - Utilize
fotocasa or idealista for apartment searching, as well as asking the school. Each year, there are new teachers working at
the school and sometimes they are willing to share an apartment. It’s
recommended that you ask as soon as you arrive at the school. |
